5th Manila Transitio 1945 Memorial Day

Since 2009, Carlos Celdran has been mounting the Manila Transitio 1945, an annual event to commemorate those brutally massacred in the Battle of Manila. The Battle of Manila in 1945 not only concluded into one big bloodbath, it also robbed Manila its beauty and charm. Manila was completely destroyed.

This commemoration and memorial event is an attempt to remind and inform Manileños that Manila was once a beautiful city, and we can redeem its beauty again. It hopes to bring a national pride in each and every heart of a Manileño by celebrating Manila’s hip art, culture and history.

The event was held at Fort Santiago, and it started at 6:00pm with a suggested ticket price of Php 200. You can donate more if you want. I went here with my friends and Esther, a couchsurfer from Singapore. There were a FutureMarket bazaar, art installations, and a labyrinth to explore.

After filling our art appreciation tank, we proceeded to the stage where a jazz band, The Executives, was playing under the stars. We sat on the grass before them and ate our dinner. After that, we proceeded to the gate of Fort Santiago to culminate the event with the release of sky lanterns in remembrance of those lost.

Though there were food kiosks in the area, you could also bring your own picnic basket and mat for a greater outdoor experience. Also bring your own pentel pens if you want to write some witty words on your sky lantern.
